When a birthday card goes round the office or the family chat, most people write "Happy birthday!" and their name. That's fine, but a few extra words make the card something the person will actually remember. Here are birthday messages to borrow, adapt or use as a starting point.

Short birthday messages

  • Happy birthday! Hope your day is as brilliant as you are.
  • Wishing you a year full of good news.
  • Happy birthday! Cake is on you, right?
  • Have the best day. You deserve it.
  • Here's to another year of being fabulous.
  • Hope this year brings you everything you've been wishing for.
  • Happy birthday! Make it a great one.
  • Cheers to you today and every day.

For colleagues

  • Happy birthday! Thanks for making work so much more fun.
  • Wishing you a fantastic birthday and a relaxing evening, no emails allowed.
  • Happy birthday to the person who always knows where everything is!
  • Hope you get a day off soon to celebrate properly. Happy birthday!
  • Have a wonderful birthday. The team is lucky to have you.
  • Happy birthday! Your desk is officially the best place in the office today.

For the boss

  • Happy birthday! Thanks for being such a supportive manager.
  • Wishing you a great birthday and a well-deserved break.
  • Happy birthday from all of us. We hope your day is as good as your leadership.

For friends

  • Happy birthday to my favourite partner in crime.
  • Another year older, and somehow still the coolest person I know.
  • Thank you for every laugh, every late night and every voice note. Happy birthday!
  • I hope this year is your best yet. Can't wait to celebrate with you.
  • You're not getting older, you're getting more interesting.

For family

  • Happy birthday to the heart of our family. We love you.
  • Wishing the happiest of birthdays to someone who makes every family gathering better.
  • Thank you for always being there. Happy birthday!
  • Happy birthday, Mum! You make everything look easy (even us).

Funny birthday messages

  • Don't worry about getting older. You're still younger than you'll be next year.
  • Happy birthday! At your age, we've stopped counting the candles and started counting the fire alarms.
  • They say age is just a number. In your case, quite a big one.
  • I was going to get you something expensive, but then I remembered: I'm your present.
  • Happy birthday! Remember, you're only as old as you feel. So, how old do you feel?

Milestone birthdays

  • 18th: Happy 18th! The world is all yours. Go and make it brilliant.
  • 21st: Happy 21st! Here's to the adventures ahead.
  • 30th: Welcome to your thirties, the decade where you finally know what you're doing (mostly).
  • 40th: Happy 40th! Forty looks fantastic on you.
  • 50th: Half a century of being amazing. Happy 50th!
  • 60th and beyond: Happy birthday! Here's to all the stories you've collected, and the ones still to come.

When you don't know them well

Big teams and families often sign cards for people they've only met a few times. That's fine: a short, friendly line is better than a signature alone.

  • Happy birthday! I hope you have a lovely day.
  • Wishing you a great birthday and a brilliant year ahead.
  • Happy birthday, and thanks for your help on the project this year.

Making a group birthday card special

  • Add a photo: a team night out, a family holiday, a picture from years ago.
  • Ask everyone for one memory or one thing they appreciate about the person.
  • Choose a GIF that's an in-joke: it often gets the biggest smile.
  • Deliver it first thing on their birthday morning: schedule it the day you start it, so you can't forget.

Questions and answers

What should I write in a colleague's birthday card?

Something short and warm: wish them a great day, thank them for something they do, and keep any joke light. "Happy birthday! Thanks for making work more fun" is perfect.

What do you write in a group birthday card?

Each person adds a short wish, ideally with something personal: a memory, a compliment or an in-joke. Photos and GIFs make it even more fun.

What's a good funny birthday message?

Light jokes about age work for most people: "You're not getting older, you're getting more interesting." Know your audience and keep it kind.

Can I schedule a birthday card to arrive in the morning?

Yes. Choose the date and time when you start the card, and it's emailed to them right on time.
